Every business can make a difference to climate change by improving their energy efficiency and encouraging other businesses to do the same, Carbon Clear said yesterday.
The carbon management company said that company directors can save money by using less energy and having a "strong" environmental policy in place can help smaller firms attract new business as they grow.
Transportation choices of ordinary UK residents make up to around a third of all emissions in the country, so by a large number of people making individual choices, "we can make a difference", the company added.
According to the Carbon Trust, UK businesses could save £1.4 billion in 2008 through energy efficient measures including replacing tungsten light bulbs with compact fluorescent lamps to save 75 per cent of energy used for lighting.
Significant savings can also be made by lowering office temperatures by just one degree, which would reduce the heating bill of a typical office by up to eight per cent a year.
Fitting seven-day timers to water coolers, vending machines and gaming machines can also reduce energy consumption by up to 70 per cent.
Mark Chadwick, chief executive of Carbon Clear, said: "Every business can make a difference. If youre a small business, you can make a smaller difference.
"But if you can encourage three of the other people you work with to do it you can start to make a bigger difference."
