Interpersonal skills are vital for budding company directors if they are to enjoy success within the business environment, according to business support group StartUp Co.
This is an area that company directors tend not to give much focus to, which is at their detriment, explained John De Groot, director of StartUp Co.
Research published by More Than Business in July 2007 indicates that 54 per cent of small business owners described their work life as stressful and 26 per cent said they were unable to relax even when away from the business on holiday.
Research also shows that a lot of business owners struggle with developing and maintaining personal relationships.
StartUp Co suggests that this is partly due to the fact that many British business people do not get involved with personal development, therefore things like their communication skills and their ability to start and nuture good relationships with people is often seen as being secondary to their technical ability to run the business.
"I would suggest that the most important thing is how they operate as a human being in their relationships with others," Mr De Groot said.
"This is occasionally where it falls down because they are not prepared to be assertive where it is required and that is just one small element of personal skills that many small business people in this country dont develop sufficiently," he added.
