A deeper understanding of information technology (IT) is spreading through all sectors of Britains economy, according to the British Computer Society (BCS).
With IT now an essential element for most businesses, people working in anything from financial services to the media are getting more computer-savvy.
The BCS also said that, at the same time, IT professionals are gaining a better understanding of the sectors they work in.
"The financial sector in the UK owes a lot to both IT and computing research for its current size," said David Evans, government relations manager at the BCS.
"The thriving media sector in Britain is extremely IT intensive, as are manufacturing services.
"The result is that people who work in these sectors are having to become IT experts, and IT experts in these fields are having to develop the deepest understanding of the sector they are working in," he added.
This trend is changing the profile of people taking an interest in and even studying IT.
For a business start-up, it is becoming increasingly important for key employees to have some degree of computer literacy, with skills like basic web design and a familiarity with common applications major advantages.
