Secretary of state for innovation, universities and skills John Denham has stressed the importance of leadership skills in boosting the competitiveness of small businesses.
As 2008 gets underway, Mr Denham has confirmed that small businesses can capitalise on expanded government-funded training to sharpen their leadership skills.
He highlighted that the governments Train to Gain service is rising from £4 million to £30 million over the next three years in recognition of leadership training and its central role in the growth of small businesses.
The service allows employers to access independent advice which can help identify crucial higher level skills needs.
Both formal certified training programmes from private providers and local education programmes are available as part of the service.
Mr Denham indicated that refined leadership skills would allow small businesses to get the best out of their employees in an increasingly competitive environment.
"This is why I have made the provision of leadership and management training, tailored to the individual needs of each business, a priority for 2008," he stated.
The Train to Gain service has highlighted that 1.3 million people go to work every day without the skills they require to do their job proficiently.
