Temporary shops that open on short-term leases can be a success and are good for competition, the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) said yesterday.
The fact that people are willing to establish such business start-ups and take risks shows that the UK is in a good situation, the FSB added.
Temporary shops are a particularly viable option in the UK because of the seasonal nature of its retail business and, rather than being a bad thing for other permanent shops, this phenomenon is generally good for business if it creates competition.
A recent survey conducted by the Financial Times found that of those who expressed an opinion, 57 per cent (31 per cent of the total sample), saw the UK as a good place to set up new companies.
Some 40 per cent (just 18 per cent of the total), said the climate to establish a business start-up in the UK was as good as in the US, which is widely seen as a gold standard by which other countries should be measured.
Simon Briault, spokesperson for the FSB, said: "In theory you could set up a viable business within a couple of days. But if youre really hoping to make it worthwhile then youd probably need to know what youre doing and have an idea also of what your competitors will be doing, whoever they will be."
